Mission Statement
The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences Education is to prepare students for life by providing opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed for:
• Strengthening the well-being of individuals and their families across the life span;
• Becoming responsible citizens and leaders in the family, the community and work settings;
• Promoting optimal nutrition and wellness across the life span;
• Managing resources to meet the material needs of individuals and families;
• Balancing personal, home, family and work lives;
• Using critical and creative thinking skills to address problems in diverse family, community and work environments;
• Managing life, including employment and career development;
• Functioning as providers and consumers of goods and services; and
• Appreciating human worth and accepting responsibility for one’s actions and success in family and work life.
Courses (offered every year):
Teen Living A (9-10)
Teen Living B (9-10)
Parenting and Child Development (10-12)
Nutrition and Foods (11-12)
College and Career Development (11-12)
VOICE Leadership (requires admission through application)
Courses (offered on rotation):
Education Assistant (11-12)
Hospitality Services (11-12)
If you are a student at THS you should consider taking some of these courses to learn important life skills that will make transitioning into your teen or adult years much easier. The FCS Department features classes that are fun and mostly project based (less paper and pencil tests).
If you are a parent or guardian of a student at THS please encourage your children to enroll in these classes. Your children are part of a new, unique generation, Generation Z. These Generation Z'ers might be amazing with technology but there is still a need for knowledge in life skills for them to become the responsible, independent citizens you hope they become.
If you are a teacher I hope you find new ideas you can put into practice in your own classrooms and I hope you'll share ideas too. That is how we all improve!
